When Vermont Yankee site Vice President Mike Colomb heard that a water pipe at the Brattleboro Boys and Girls Club had burst, destroying the lower level dance floor and ruining the carpet in the computer lab, he decided to adopt the BBGC as Vermont Yankee’s community project for 2010. The first thing VY provided the club with was new carpeting for their computer lab.
Next in line was replacing the dance floor with a floating, interlocking panel wood floor. In August, volunteer employee work crews installed the new wood dance floor. Work included securing the edges of the floor into the concrete below, sanding and re-varnishing the floor and installing baseboard trim.

That was just half of the story. The exterior of the building was in poor physical condition, outside current fire code standards and in need of some major curb appeal. In October, volunteer work crews performed a major uplift of the building’s exterior. It was upgraded with fire retardant sheetrock, insulated and re-sided, electrical connections re-worked, windows caulked, the front exterior re-painted and masonry re-pointed.

“Although Entergy provided funding/materials for these renovations, the key aspect to completing this work was our employees who volunteered their time and energy to make it happen,” said Site Vice President Mike Colomb. “All work was performed after normal work hours and on weekends. Over 50 employees participated in the multi-phased project, sharing their skills and expertise in getting the renovations completed.”

These windows will be replaced at the Brattleboro Boys and Girls Club in the continued renovations.

Tasks and the schedule were planned well in advance of the work date with assistance from Art Greenbaum, GPI Construction. Before the start of each work session, pre-job briefings were conducted with the emphasis on safety – our key priority.

”The story doesn’t stop here though,” said Colomb. “There is still more work to do on the building. I am pleased to announce that in 2011, with funding from Entergy and our employee volunteers, we will complete the renovation to the upper exterior portion of the Boys and Girls Club building. All the old upper front windows will be removed and replaced with new energy efficient windows. In addition, we will finish re-pointing the brick façade of the building.”

“The Boys and Girls Club of Brattleboro plays an important role in the lives of many of our local youth. Entergy and the employees of Vermont Yankee are proud to be a part of the revitalization of this amazing community asset,” said Colomb.

Work is expected to be completed by the end of September.
