Emergency Planning Zone
The area approximately 10 miles around the Vermont Yankee is called the Emergency Planning Zone. Plans have been developed for warning and protecting people within this 10-mile area. Communities in the Emergency Planning Zone are:
Massachusetts:
- Bernardston*
- Colrain
- Gill
- Greenfield
- Leyden*
- Northfield
- Warwick
- Chesterfield*
- Hinsdale*
- Richmond*
- Swanzey
- Winchester*
- Brattleboro*
- Dummerston*
- Guilford*
- Halifax*
- Marlboro*
- Vernon*
The Emergency Planning Zone is further divided into sub-areas called Emergency Response Planning Areas (ERPA). To be prepared for an emergency, you will need to determine the number of the Emergency Response Planning Area you live or work in. Knowing your Emergency Response Planning Area, or Emergency Response Planning Area number, is very important since any emergency instructions that you will receive on radio and TV will be for specific Emergency Response Planning Areas. The broadcasts will inform people, depending upon which Emergency Response Planning Area they are in, about protective actions they should take.
